Case study to help pregnant women to have a safe pregnancy journey.
A UX/UI case study - Now pregnant women can just need not worry and be confused about things, they can have a safe and better pregnancy journey, clear their doubts in their fingers tip- A fitness application for pregnant women
Overview
Pregnancy triggers all kinds of new emotions, physical changes, and of course, lots of questions. From wondering about average baby growth to the safest foods to eat, being pregnant requires your brain to work on overdrive. Unfortunately, getting the answers to some of your most pressing questions can be as much difficult, of course googling and getting answers for your doubts is not a big deal, but wasting more time on simple doubts is a waste of your precious time.
This case study is on the behavioral changes women undergo in their pregnancy, helping them to solve their doubts, confusion, etc
This project was done by me only for learning purposes and showcasing myself and is not made, owned, or affiliated directly to any application.

5 Ws — WHO, WHAT, WHEN, WHERE & WHY — To understand my secondary research much better
It is not easy to carry out research without having any proper knowledge on things, this will always end up with uneven research, so going deeper is very important, and conducting good research is directly proportional to the quality of the proposed solution.
Hear I have so many questions which I need to ask myself and plan a research accordingly, here you may feel too much, but this really helped me a lot to understand my research and users in a much better way.
Who..?
Who are we solving the problem for? And who are your target users.?
Here users are pregnant, but here pregnant from different fields, backgrounds, different mentalities matters, I will check these out by doing some research on finding my target users by reading some articles in my desk research.
Who all will benefit from this research.?
After I get some knowledge on who my users are, I will also do some research by reading research papers and articles that other than my users, who will be benefited from this research.
What..?
What is the ultimate goal/impact?
I will find out the goal of the research by interviewing my users( in my primary research), understanding their thoughts, lifestyle, and expectations that they wish to have.
What if you won’t get the expected data from your users.?
I will find out what are all the possible options I have to converse with them to get the expected/sufficient data from my users. And I’ll also try to find how to be friendly with my users. If this doesn’t work I’ll try finding more users till I get the proper data.
On what basis are you planning to frame questions for your users.?
I will firstly work on how to talk to my users and how to be friendly with them, how to converse with them, and research on what are the common questions to be asked for them by checking in some pregnancy-related articles.
What is the time limit you set to complete the project?
I will have a look at what is the time taken by other researchers and my teammates to complete the project and set my estimated time for the project.
What are the myths and misconceptions followed in pregnancy.?
I will try to find the myths which are considered very seriously when they are pregnant by reading articles available on the internet and also in 1–1 interviews with my users.
What are the doubts women will have when they are pregnant.?
I will research the confusions, doubts women have in their pregnant life.
What lifestyle to be followed by users to have a safe and healthy delivery.?
I will find out how women have to change their lifestyle to have a very safe and healthy new journey. I will also check on the role of meditation, exercise, yoga, food, etc in a pregnant woman’s life.
What are the reasons which effects conceiving..?
I will check out what are the factors which are affecting women to become pregnant. It may be a physical factor or a mental factor.
What is the age limit to get pregnant.?
I will read articles on which is the perfect time period to get pregnant so that women can have a healthy pregnancy journey.
What are the foods pregnant should and shouldn’t eat.?
Being fit and healthy is absolutely very important for a woman when she is two, I will find out the list of foods women should and should not consume when they are pregnant.
What are the applications which already exist to track the food, lifestyle, the fitness of pregnant women.? And merits and demerits of the same.
I will check on this by reading articles, checking reviews on the particular applications, and interviewing users who already use applications to track their progress.
What is the role of a partner in a woman’s pregnancy journey.?
I will check on what is the role, what impact will they have and not have if women have a caring partner/caretaker in their journey.
What are the reasons for miscarriage.? How to avoid it.?
I will read the articles on the reasons behind miscarriage. When will it occur.? and what are the measures to be followed to be safe during these days etc.
What are the problems users face in the initial stage of their pregnancy.?
Users may not have much idea on their journey if it was their first pregnancy, I’ll find out what are the confusions/doubts women will have in their pregnancy.
Where..?
Where do we need to focus most?
I will read articles and find the possible problems where users face issues and focus on that. I also will work on user problems which I got from my 1–1 interviews where exactly users are facing problems.
Where do users get information regarding their health and fitness.?
I will check out what are all the platforms available for women to get information on their health and also will research how effective they are.
When..?
When is the problem occurring?
I will try to research on the internet by checking reviews on a few fitness applications and pregnancy applications so that I’ll get some idea, and I will also ask my users when they are facing issues/ problems.
When do they need an application to track.?(I mean in which month.?)
I will check on which is the perfect time/month to start tracking their growth and their child’s growth in their womb.
Why..?
Why is it important to solve the problem?
I will try to find out and read the articles on this, where I can get some knowledge on what are all the problems users are facing and what are the benefits that they will get when this problem is solved.
Why should people be careful when they are pregnant.?
I will check on what are the problems and health complications women face in their maternal journey if they are not careful in their pregnancy.
While I was thinking about W’s question I also got some HOW..? questions, and I feel this is absolutely fine to explore/go deeper into my secondary research.
How..?
How many users are you considering for your research as your user.?
I will research what is the general number of users people consider for their research, above which I get a general answer, and continue my research with the same number.
How have you planned to take an interview?
I will take a complete look at the workbooks provided by the growth school, and have a plan on what are the procedures I need to follow to carry out my research.
How many people prefer applications to track their pregnancy records.?
I will check on the average number of pregnant women who actually prefer an application to track their progress.
How many are aware of tracking their physiological changes in their pregnancy.?
I will research what is the percentage of women who have the knowledge to track their records in their pregnancy.
How safe is it to travel in their pregnancy.?
I will check out what is the right time(month) to travel and which is the time to take rest completely.
How often do pregnant women face mood swings.? Can they handle it alone or do they need any mental support.?
I will read articles on the mental state of pregnant women during their pregnancy.
How important is it to exercise and physically be active to have a safe and healthy pregnancy journey.?
I will read articles on the role of proper exercises, and what effects they will have on the pregnancy journey.
How does wearing a proper dress have an impact on pregnancy.?
I will research what are comfortable dresses for pregnant women and how they have to concentrate and take care of them.
Secondary Research
Secondary research or desk research is a research method that involves using already existing data. Secondary research includes research material published in research reports and similar documents. These documents can be made available by public libraries, websites, data obtained from already filled-in surveys, etc.
Desk research helped me to understand more about my users and their thinking at that time, which gave a very good lead to my further research, it also helped me to define my target user in a better way
Covid-19 and lockdown impacts on fitness applications
- Lockdown: Fitness applications see a 15% increase in engagement
- Fitness consultation app FITTR saw 15% more downloads during the period
- Staying at home has fitness junkies worried. In the absence of a gym workout or any outdoor activity
- Cure.fit launched cult.live, virtual live streaming of different workouts in early March, so that people can continue to work on their fitness goals and stay active from home
Exercise during pregnancy
- Ideally, pregnant women should get at least 150 minutes of moderate-intensity aerobic activity every week. Anaerobic activity is one in which you move large muscles of the body (like those in the legs and arms) in a rhythmic way
- Physical activity does not increase your risk of miscarriage, low birth weight, or early delivery
- Certain conditions that make exercise during pregnancy unsafe — heart and lung diseases, pregnant with twins or triplets (or more) with risk factors for preterm labor, Preeclampsia or pregnancy-induced high blood pressure, severe anemia
- Benefits of exercise during pregnancy — Reduces back pain, Promotes healthy weight gain during pregnancy, Eases constipation
- Signs that I should stop exercising — Bleeding from the vagina, Chest pain, Headache, Muscle weakness, Regular, painful contractions of the uterus
Nutritional knowledge and dietary intake
- Less than half (44.9%) of the pregnant adolescents have high nutritional knowledge.
- About 19.4% of them have good eating habits, while 23.9%, 18.2%, and 6.4% of them do not take breakfast, lunch, and supper, respectively
- Additionally, only 3.8% of them do take fruits and vegetables daily
- Proper nutrition during pregnancy is important for the well-being of the mother and fetus and supports health during pregnancy, delivery, and breastfeeding
- there are little data on nutritional knowledge and dietary intake among adolescents who are pregnant
- Educational level and age are risk factors for pregnants between 15 and 19 years old
- The study also showed that educational level was significantly associated with good eating habits
- Furthermore, it was revealed that occupation and ethnicity were major factors influencing pregnancy eating habits.
Barriers to exercise for pregnant ladies
- lack of time and knowledge was a barrier to physical activity for 57.7% of respondents
- In the published scientific literature, reported barriers to exercise during pregnancy include nausea, fatigue, lack of time, physical limitations, lack of social support, and lack of access to exercise facilities
- An Australian study that surveyed 158 women in both their first and third trimesters showed that nausea peaked as a barrier in the first trimester, and fatigue remained present throughout pregnancy Australian study that surveyed 158 women in both their first and third trimesters showed that nausea peaked as a barrier in the first trimester, and fatigue remained present throughout pregnancy
- Not enough time in the day for exercise, not a regular exerciser, uncomfortable with all the changes in my body, lack of access to facilities or equipment, advice from friends, family, or both against exercise in pregnancy, nausea, or too tired, fear of hurting the baby or miscarriage

Primary research
After a lot of backend works the real game started, which was to find my users and get insights from them, but finding users was the most challenging and difficult part of my research. I contacted all my friends, friends of friends and I could get only 3 users and not more than that, but I wanted a number of 5 users, I then visited my nearby gynecologist, took permission from her to take feedback from her patients, and finally got 2 more users for my research, yeahhh…!!!
preparing for the interview session:

Below are some key points from my 1:1 interviews
“In an app (Healofy) baby saying makes me happier and connected to the application”
The majority of women are attracted to baby photos, videos when they are pregnant, which gives a unique feeling to them
“I get more information from the internet(my youtube doctor) rather than my personal doctor”
Most of my users said that they regularly follow youtube to clear most of their doubts, this is because few doctors regularly update their opinion on a weekly/monthly basis on their youtube channel, which would help pregnant women
“I always prefer normal delivery so I have been consulting one of the best doctors in the entire state who is very experienced and famous for carrying out normal deliveries”
Normal and c-section delivery is one of the most worrying matters for new mom-to-be, but 70% of women prefer to have normal rather than c-section, and they do follow a lot of things said by their family members to achieve that
“I clear some of the doubts from my neighbors (who is senior to me in pregnancy)”
women clear their doubts with friends, neighbors, online apart from their personal doctors
“I used some alternatives to reduce my weight after my 2nd pregnancy by having Herbalife, dieting, etc”
some women do care about how to reduce their body weight after delivery, but due to unorganized methods they end up with no changes in them
“I initially faced nausea and vomiting in their first trimester, which reduced my weight from 52kgs to 40kgs”
nausea is the main thing that directly impacts women health in her first trimester, most women are fed up with this
“Though I have an interest in exercise I couldn’t push for it, I feel to start but I never start- I need some motivation on that”
due to so many barriers, women cannot push themselves into exercises/workouts, so they might need a strong motivation
“Doing all household works make me active and that would really help her to have a normal delivery”
women knew that being active and happy would really have a very good impact on their pregnancy journey, but some barriers make them feel depressed and inactive
“ I get confused on which application to use,I google, I use youtube, I have joined few pregnancy whatsapp groups, and get information from every social media”
women are confused about using multiple platforms for simple doubts, they feel it would have been better if they had the same platform for all their doubts
I am so scared of things if I remember my delivery day, I still pray god to have a safe and smooth delivery(it may be normal or c-section)
it may be normal or c-section some women still have a lot of fear on how her delivery would be, mental support and positivity is absolutely necessary these days
I forget things which I have planned to ask with my doctor previously, this is because I mess up things
some women usually plan some doubts to be cleared when they visit their personal doctor but end up asking only a few of them due to long conversations, they actually forget important things sometimes
After analyzing all my research data of both primary and secondary research, I have created a user set to narrow down the solution for the problem
User set 1: Conscious and well-prepared mom
- She involves herself in all kinds of household works to be fit and active and mainly she prefers to have a normal delivery
- She is very confident, though she is facing the situation for the first time she is a bit confident in her works
- She also involves herself in some exercises(sometimes) to have a healthy pregnancy journey
- Though she didn’t have much knowledge on foods to consume and exercises to be practiced, she somehow manages to gather information either from her doctor/friends/neighbors/applications/internet, etc
- She just tries to be social — does not hesitate to clear her doubts with anyone
- Frequently checks app for what to consume and what not to consume, and track their babies growth, etc
- Regularly follows applications like youtube, healofy, etc
User set 2: Non-conscious and scared mom
- She is so scared of her delivery(both normal and c-section)
- Always scared for things-thinking how would her journey be
- Does Not wishes to have a planned life and she let it like just go with the flow
- Though she likes to exercise by watching some videos she couldn’t push herself for it
- She always depends on only one for all kinds of info, it may be her doctor/app, etc
- She is not social — doesn’t clear her doubts with everyone, she is stuck for one(her doctor)
- She tried improper exercises a long back but didn’t have any impact on her- negative mindset on exercise and its impact
- Does Not follow the app regularly, just gets info from her doctor once she visits him/her
Empathy mapping
An Empathy map will help us understand your user’s needs while I develop a deeper understanding of the persons I’m designing for
Personas
With the help of empathy maps, I created user personas, which then gave a very good lead for my further research to easily understand my users
Define HMW questions
Now it’s time to understand the user problems and to come up with our own solutions for that.. but before that, defining How Might We solve things for the user helps us to understand the problem more clear
- How might we educate users to have some basic knowledge on their diet plan to be healthy in their pregnancy?
- How might we help her to have knowledge on her physical changes and help her mentally and physically supported
Since first pregnancy is filled with different kinds of new emotions, it is very common for women to have confusion at that stage, so educating them in a very good and ordered way would really help them a lot to clear most of their doubts
- How might we help users to find and access her medical documents and baby medical documents easily whenever required without any confusion?
Guiding women to save their essentials and accessing them easily would make sense for this
- How might we provide good and effective knowledge for pregnant women so that they get each and every doubt cleared in the same place?
Suggesting or providing her with any application/websites so that she can clear all her doubts in a single place, with all the required information, instead of searching for multiple applications/platforms would kill her time as well as her patience
- How might we educate women to handle things themselves without any fear though there is no one to take care of her
Making her feel safe. By providing her good mental strength and motivating her to be as strong as possible when no one is there to care for her
- How might we help the user to know the information of her baby’s well being
As a new mom-to-be, worrying about her baby’s well being is common, so providing necessary information by satisfying all her needs would help her
- How might we help the user to remember things so that the remainder can remind her of important things?
Letting her remind things in her calendar with a note would help her
Wireframing and Ideation
Low fidelity wireframes:
I just with paper and pen sketched my thoughts on paper to have an idea of how my solution would look like, here are they
High fidelity wireframes:
Now the task was to convert all low fidelity wireframes(my paper sketches) into high fidelity wireframes to give them some life
- This is the main page/ Home page/ Landing page
- The main attraction of this application is I have added a baby image and baby talks(where her baby explains things for its mom ) in almost every page just to redirect mom to follow the application also this will create a unique bonding between a mother and the application.
- You can also see the number of weeks and months here (i,e; how old is the baby), and the days left to meet the baby. — this would also make women feel more excited for the big day
- And a few sections which redirect to multiple pages like, mom health, baby health, diet, fitness, etc.
- You can find an arrow button at the top left on clicking which gets you to the previous page
- Here, the mom gets some basic information on her baby’s development which includes the development of body parts, and how active is the baby is, its length, size, height, weight, etc
- You can also see baby’s talk here which would help mom to have more connection with the application, by making her feel like her baby is suggesting things for her
- This will be almost like weekly tips, where it gets updated every week
- This is a page where mom gets all required information on her physical changes, symptoms, measures to be followed to overcome it, etc
- This will be almost like weekly tips, where it gets updated every week
- As a new mom-to-be, it will be very difficult to have knowledge of her diet
- This page gives mom an idea of her diet, i,e; do’s and don’ts in her food, and the impact of those foods on the body.
- There might be a situation where women forget things that have to be remembered/any special days/ any notes to be remembered, etc. This sometimes would impact serious issues. So this is a page to add reminders/notes.
- Tracking body functionalities is very much necessary for a pregnant woman, here is a page to have all her digital records and to collect them in one single place which would reduce the task of carrying all her hard copies everywhere.
- I have also added to check on her previously added digital records, and this would help her to track changes/variations in her measurements from month to month
- This would also help to access all records wherever whenever and necessary within her fingertip
- Other than her data records I have also added an option to add her important reports (which are images/documents/pdf, etc), that can be scanned copy, consultation slips, etc
- This reduces the search time of her documents manually, and she can easily check them whenever she wants to
- I have added an option to connect with friends to share their experiences and give/get suggestions on necessary things by texting with them or having a call with them
- This idea came into my mind when two of my users were not able to visit/connect online(even online consultation was not proper for them-they weren’t responding properly) to their doctor due to lockdown
UI design
For my UI design, I selected “StrongHer” as my base application
Why strong her..?
When I was checking online for fitness applications, I could find only a few applications particularly for women, StrongHer was one among them, the design and a good workflow attracted me to this application, as it was a paid app, I thought why don’t I work on this app by adding a pregnant section in it, so that anyhow women are already spending some money on it, so it would be more worthy if there would be a pregnancy section.
After I choose my base app, I have made some small changes in my wireframes so that they can match the design of my base app, as I was suggested not to change the design or build the new app design I was allowed only just to change the necessary things and add some components, this made me decide for some minute changes in my wireframes.
Once the user enters necessary conditions such as name, email/phone number, age, weight, last menstrual date, etc they would enter into a below-landing page
- As soon as pregnant women logins with her last period dates and necessary conditions she will land here, where she can find no of days remaining for her delivery, no of weeks for her baby
- A simple animation of the baby saying “Hey mommy..!!”, has been added to the home page which makes pregnant women more connected and more attached to the application
- And there is a section to track her body conditions, her baby conditions, her diet plan, fitness, etc
- She can consult doctors online, friends online and can clear her doubts
Problem being solved
The home page lets users easily identify each section and avoids confusion on more information in a single place
Baby saying motivates mom to stick to this app design
- A page where women can connect to friends(others who are using this app), I have given some information like pregnancy status and place where she is from
- I also have added a search button to search particular person by knowing the name
- On clicking the connect button the request will be sent to the person, once accepting the invitation both can converse and clear their doubts
Problem being solved
I got feedback like there was a situation in lockdown that there were no hospitals open, and it was very difficult for her to reach out to her doctor, and even online consultation was difficult sometimes, so with this option mom-to-be can connect friends and get her doubts solved from them
The search option also makes it many users friendly
- Add to remember page were added so that they save any important notes/information which they would use further
- There is also add to calendar button which redirects to bookmark things in their calendar
Problem being solved
Few women forget things to ask with her doctor when she visits, she will be having some doubts and thinks of clearing these doubts when she next visits her doctor, but when she visits her doctor she unknowingly skips one or the other doubts to be cleared, so this would help her to get rid of this issue
Mom-to-be can also add other notes and let her app remind things for her
- one more special thing in the design is baby saying, many pieces of information conveying here are words said by baby to its mother, this gives a unique feeling to those mom-to-be-ladies(this is almost carried in every page) and feels more attached for the app
- A page to save documents/images of important documents so that they will be available within the app and accessed when needed easily
- You can also find a baby saying here, as baby is giving some information for mom, you can find this in almost every page
- Banner images here will be updated every week, this happens on every page with a similar design
Problem being solved
When I asked for the report with one of my users she said that it has been missed when cleaning the house, and the need to search for that and she also asked some time to do that, so if that can be stored as a soft copy within the app, I may help them to easily access them, and always carrying hard copy would be hard
- This is a page where mom-to-be can know about their baby, which includes its size, length, height, weight, etc, and weekly development is updated here
- Banner images here will be updated every week, this happens on every page with a similar design
Problem being solved
The baby’s well being is one of the biggest concerns these days for all mom-to-be ladies, so this is a place where she can get all up to date information about her baby
- This is the page to save data and to track them, i,e; women can add statistical data of their reports so that they can have a track on them, they can get an idea through the variation in the range every month
- Adding new data is also simple and easy, they can just scroll and can find the additional option there and can easily add the data
- Banner images here will be updated every week, this happens on every page with a similar design
Problem being solved
It will help a lot in having a good track on her and her body as well as baby body conditions
- A page where mom-to-be can have some information on her weekly symptoms, having an idea on what changes her body is going through, makes her more comfortable and help her to be ready to face upcoming challenges
- Both mom-to-be info page and mom-to-be diet works the same way, it gives deep knowledge on things
Problem being solved
As a new mom-to-be, is not aware of her physical changes, this would give her a brief knowledge and would help her to feel more confident in herself.
And also having knowledge on what to eat and what not would help her to prepare stronger for the well-being of both herself and her baby.
Baby saying helps mom to follow things as she may feel these words are said by her baby and she needs to follow them without fail
Testing
User testing is the process through which the interface and functions of a website, app, product, or service are tested by real users who perform specific tasks in realistic conditions
Due to the unavailability of my previous users whom I have interviewed for my primary research, now I had to find new users, finding them was also a very bad task but managed to get my new users by contacting my friends and friends of friends
USER 1: Sandhya
- She could easily understand the things on the landing page but she wished to have live photos instead of baby animations
- She couldn’t identify the baby sayings on every page as it was the same as the other texts
- She was confused in connecting to friends because she felt how can she know that someone can clear her specific doubt by knowing only her basic info
- She was not able to get a clear idea of where would friends icon take her to, she was confused between is the option to share things with personal friends or making new friends
- She didn’t feel much confusion in understanding the things in the UI apart from one or two
- She was happy with the UI and she said that she would surely use such applications
- She liked baby health, mom health, and diet page very much
USER 2: Ranjitha
- She couldn’t identify mom health, baby health, diet, and fitness section as clickable(she didn’t feel it was a button)
- She was reading each data on the page and trying to understand every single bit
- Even though the note page was self-explanatory she couldn’t understand things there
- She couldn’t identify that the images will get changed/updated every week
- She was happy with the images above on each page, which made her easy to identify the particular page easily
USER 3: Poornima
- She easily identified and explained almost 98% of the things in the UI
- On the Track body page, she was a bit confused, she was confused about whether to add details manually or will it be automatically updated
- “I liked the document page(page to add your documents)”- she feels documents stored here will always be with them so that they can have access to the soft copy easily
- She also liked the note page, she feels it was a good idea to note/save things there itself instead of using a separate application
- She was expecting another section on music so that listening to that mild music would make her happy when feeling down
- “Easily understandable UI, but for the one who is not able to get it, baby saying helps them, it's very nice”
- “Instead of replacing the join groups page with the add friend page, it would be better if you retain both. friends page will help for women who wants a private chat”- she wished to have a private chat as well because sometimes she felt fed up with more unwanted messages from groups
Updated UI
SCREEN — 1
- Buttons indicating sliding images at the banner have been added(this have been added on almost every page)
- Added a linear color for baby saying so that it will be highlighted
SCREEN — 2
- Instead of baby animation, real baby photos have been added to the banner to make it more live and attractive.
- Buttons indicating sliding images at the banner have been added.
- Mom health, baby health, diet, and fitness tab have been a little more heightened to make it look like a clickable button.
- Instead of online doctors have added another button saying join group, on clicking which it takes to below page.
SCREEN — 3
- In reality, it is not possible to randomly connect with some ‘X’ person, conversing with them and getting users’ doubts solved. Users will not have any idea on will they get any solution for their problem from person ‘X’ by only knowing their basic info
- So instead of connecting individually with other users, I felt it was better to join a community or group, where multiple users share their thoughts
- So I created a new page, where users can find multiple groups, and they can join whatever the groups they wish to, and start conversing with the community(which includes doctors as well), clear their doubts
- There is also a search button to search groups, and a button to load more groups
- image — 2, on joining a group it takes to respective groups and user can start a conversation or check others messages
- I have also retained the friend's page for those who wish to chat personally by connecting to friends
Learnings
There are so many takeaways from this project, got to know the importance of secondary research, user testing, and its iterations, the difficulties in finding my target user
Another very important learning was that I need to understand that my solution need not try and solve every problem that the user is facing. The solution can be very simple as well as long as it is efficient and is enhancing the user’s experience.
Looking forward to more exciting projects in the future…
